Abstract
R= H) was prepared as described by alkylation of ethyl cyaiioacetate with A3-cyclopentenyl tosylate5 and afforded a 60% yield of ethyl a-cyano-a-(A3-cyclopentenyl) acetate, 6 bp 143'(16 mm.), n2b 1.4584, N-benzylamide, mp 115-116', which upon hydrolysis with 50yo aqueous ethanolic potassium hydroxide produced A3-cyclopentenylmalonic acid, mp 149- 150'dec., in 90% yield.
