Abstract

The photochemical reaction of the three methoxyphenol ethyl carbonates has been examined. Each of the compounds undergoes a photo-Fries type of reaction to produce methoxyhydroxybenxoates. A free-radical mechanism is proposed based on the substitution patterns observed in the products and on the quantum yields of the reactions.
