Abstract

The mild and efficient deblocking of aryl benzyl ethers with TFA is reported. Cleavage was fastest with ortho-electron-withdrawing groups on the phenolic ring, which we have attributed to a proton chelation effect, furnishing the deprotected phenols in excellent yields.
