Abstract

Molecular iodine catalyzes acetalation and acetylation of reducing sugars and sugar glycosides with stoichiometric amounts of enol acetates under solvent-free conditions, thereby facilitating the synthesis of various types of orthogonally protected sugar derivatives in short time and good yields.
