Abstract

A novel, one step synthesis of pyrano [2, 3-b] pyri-dines from malononitrile and unsaturated ketones is reported. The reaction mechanism is discussed and takes place through an intermediate monocyclic 4H-pyran. Several derivatives with different substitution patterns are prepared.
