Abstract

In spite of the large amount of work on pinacolyl alcohol, its dehydration products and its halides, the subject is still confused. This is shown by the fact that the fourth edition of Beilstein's “Handbuch” gives the halides the tertiary structure,(CH&CXCH (CH3) 2, corresponding to a complete rearrangement, while the supplement to the fourth edition gives the structure,(CH&CCHXCH3.
