Abstract

acrylonitrile.-A solution of 10 g.(0.066 mole) of p-nitrobenzaldehyde and 12.2 g.(0.066 mole) of the sodium salt 6f phenylnitroacetonitrile in 200 cc. of, methanol was refluxed for fourteen hours. The solution turned red and a copious precipitate formed as the reaction progressed. The mixture was cooled and filtered, and the crystalline mass was washed with cold methanol. Recrystallization from glacial acetic acid gave 13.5 g.(73%) of fl-methoxy-
