Abstract
4H-Cyclopenta [def] phenanthrene (1)'is of interest because it is a strained molecule combining special features of both the fluorene and the phenanthrene structures, but the reactivities of 1 have been scarcely reported. 2 The present paper deals with rearrangements and ring expansions on the active methylene bridge of 1.
