Abstract

The solvolyses in acetic acid and 80% aqueous acetone of 4-, 5-, 6-and 7-methoxy-l- bromomethylnaphthalene, and 6-and 8-methoxy-2-bromomethylnaphthalenes are reported at various temperatures. The data indicate that there is little resonance stabilization of the carbonium ion by the methoxy group in the intermediates from 5-methoxy-1-bromomethyl or the 8-methoxy-2-bromomethyl compounds. h small effect is observed in the case of the 7- ...
