Several GH-pyrido [4, 3-b] carbazoles, notably ellipticine (la) and related compounds, have aroused widespread interest owing to their significant antitumor activity.'Although many synthetic routes to them have been devised, 2 most of these methods are not satisfactory for accesss to a variety of derivatives, despite their apparent simplicity.
