Abstract

XI hydroxide and the crude product subsequently treated with acid, 9-methyl-10- phenylphenan-threne (XII) was produced. This type of rearrangement has been reported previously for 9, lO-dihydro-9-phenanthrols4 and for certain phenanthronesj when subjected to reduction and treatment with acid.
