Abstract
An examination of the chlorination of phenylmethy), diphenylmethyl, and triphenylmethyl methylsulfonyl sulfides (1, 2, and 3) in aqueous acetic acid has provided indirect evidence for Pummerer rearrangement during the chlorination of an α-methylsulfonyl sulfinyl chloride. The results are discussed from both mechanistic and synthetic standpoints.
