Abstract

In a consideration of routes for the synthesis of mustard oil glucosides, the addition of thiols to nitrile oxides appeared to us to represent an attractively direct and simple method of constructing the thiohydroxi~nate system characteristic of these compounds. The only examples of the realization of this reaction which appear to be reported in the literature are the preparation by Alemagna and Bacchetti (I) of some benzothiohydroxi- mates, eg IV (R' = phenyl, R" = benzyl).
