Abstract

Molecules of natural origin containing a functionalized glactam (pyrrolidin-2-one) ring system with a quaternary stereocenter [1] at C5 hold a prominent position in chemistry and biology. Important examples of these g-lactams include the proteasome inhibitors lactacystin and salinosporamide A, dysibetaine, and several examples from the oxazolomycin family of antibiotics (Scheme 1).
