Abstract: Photolysis of tricyclic ketones 8b-d, 9b, and 10 leads to the products collected in Table I. These results, along with earlier findings with related ketones 6 and 7, are interpreted as strong evidence for the stepwise mechanism of eq 1, in which opening of the three-membered ring occurs by way of a-cleavage, rearrangement of the initial cyclopropylcarbinyl radical to a homoallyl radical under stereoelectronic control, and then ...
