Abstract
We present a new synthetic strategy for preparing tetraphenylporphyrins that should greatly expand synthetic entries into porphyrin containing model systems. Pyrrole and the desired benzaldehyde react reversibly at room temperature with trace acid catalysis to form the cyclic tetraphenylporphyrinogen at thermodynamic equilibrium.
