Abstract

Abstract A general strategy for the synthesis of membrane-spanning bipolar phospholipids equipped with a reactive functional group probe of the membrane environment is described. The strategy is exemplified by the synthesis of a bisphosphatidylethanolamine that is connected through a benzylidene thioacetal of the ω-hydroxy esters at the sn-2 position of the two phosphoglycerol termini.
