Abstract

1) Oxidation of 4-Chloro-9H-xanthene-9-thione (1): Equimolecular amounts of 1 and yellow mercury (l1) oxide in dry benzene (20 ml) were heated under reflux for 1 h. The reaction mixture was filtered while hot, and the filtrate was distilled off under reduced pressure. The oily residue was solidified on treatment with ethanol. The colourless product obtained proved to be 4-chloro-9H-xanthen-9-one by mixed mp with an authentic sample.
