Abstract

Summary 1. Some comparisons are made with respect to the relative ease with which urea, thiaurea and benzamidine condense with an cr-alkyl-a-cwbethoxy-y-butyric lactone and an alkylmalonic ester to yield compounds related to pyrimidine. A tentative mechanism for the reaction is proposed which is based partly on the isolation of two types of intermediates. The replacement of bromine in the p-position to the barbituric acid nucleus proceeds smoothly. ...
