Abstract
There has recently been considerable interest in the synthesis of medium ring ether marine natural prducts, and significant progress has been achieved both in ring expansion reactions and in the controlled cyclisation of acyclic precursors.1 Of all the features present in the various Laurencia and related cyclic ether metabolites which have been isolated from red algae the b-halo ether substituent is probably the most challenging.
