Abstract

A proposed mechanism for Cu (triphos)-catalyzed alkylation of diphenylphosphine was supported by isolation or observation of the intermediates. Deprotonation of [Cu (triphos)(PHPh2)][PF6](12) gave the phosphido complex Cu (triphos)(PPh2)(22), which reacted with benzyl bromide or CH2Cl2 to yield tertiary phosphine complexes [Cu (triphos)(PPh2CH2X)][PF6](16, 17; X= Ph or Cl).
