Abstract

We thought that the construction of the 1,5-benzothiazepine moiety from 1 and 2 may involve two pathways: (i) conjugate addition of the sulfhydryl group of 2 to the α,β-unsaturated carbonyl group of 1 leading to the intermediate formation of the thia-Michael adduct I which, on subsequent intramolecular nucleophilic attack by the NH 2 group on the carbonyl carbon followed by dehydration, forms the 2,3-dihydro-1,5-benzothiazepine 3 (Path a), [16] or (ii) ...
