A seven step synthesis of 1,8-diethynylnaphthalene (IX) from naphthalic anhydride (I) is described. Oxidation of IX with oxygen, cuprous chloride and ammonium chloride gave the very unstable “cyclic dimer” (XX), containing a conjugated 14-membered ring.
