Abstract

Abstract Ozonolysis of carotol (1) gives dihydroxy ketone 2 (63% yield), the absolute configuration of which was established by X-ray crystallography. An acidic dehydration of 2 delivers a mixture of isomeric ketones 3 and 4 (3: 1) that, catalysed by Pd/C in cyclohexene, yields a 1: 1 thermodynamic mixture of 3 and 6.
