Abstract
The action of formic acid on the allylic alcohol 8 gives 2-methyl-2-vinyl-Ag-octalin in good yield. The structure of the product follows from its proton magnetic resonance spectrum. The three-spin system of the vinyl group is apparent but no other vinyl protons are observed (see Experimental). The eight allylic protons appear as a broad peak at T 7.9-8.3.
