Abstract

Figure 1. the active phosphorus reagent can be generated in situ by deprotonation of the phosphonium salt with a strong base. During recent investigations in which unsaturated alcohols 2 were being prepared from 6-valerolactol (l), we observed the unusual formation of unsaturated adducts 3 in reactions for which n-butyllithium had been used as the base (Scheme I).
