Abstract

Summary 1. Aqueous solutions of D-xylose form small amounts of 2-furaldehyde on being heated. The presence of a relatively large amount of glycine promotes this conversion as it does the analogous conversion of hexoses to 5-(hydroxymethyl)-2-fur-aldehyde. The course of the formation of 2-furaldehyde from D-xylose has been followed spectroscopically and on this basis structures are postulated for several intermediates. It is demonstrated that 5-( ...
