Abstract
The ester functional group is ubiquitous throughout the natural and synthetic world of organic chemistry and has resulted in decades of effort being devoted to its synthesis and manipulation. In addition to being valuable synthetic targets themselves, esters also serve the role of protective groups for other functionalities.
