Abstract: The insertion of phenyl (bromodichloromethy1) mercury-derived dichlorocarbene into the benzylic CH bond of (+)-Zphenylbutane occurs with predominant retention of configuration. The kinetic deuterium isotope effect for this process was determined to be 2.5.
