Abstract
Friedel-Crafts acylation of 5 or 8 with acetyl chloride in the presence of aluminum chloride provided the acetophenones 9 (80%) and 10 (87%) respectively? Oxidation of the acetophenones with 5% bleach (Haloform Reaction9) provided the desired trihalobenzoic acid ll" and 12 in excellent yields.
