Abstract

Trimethyl-and tri-n-butylphosphoniumfluorenylide (Ib and Id respectively) have been prepared and their relative reactivities in the Wittig reaction have been established. The various factors which control the success of failure of this reaction have been elucidated. A means of predicting the reactivity of ylids has been established.
