Abstract

The first 2', 3'-dideoxynucleoside, 3'-deoxythymidine, was reported by Michelson and Todd in 1955 [1]. The first purine dideoxynucleoside, 2', 3'-dideoxyadenosine, was reported by Robins and Robins in 1964, who noted that such analogues might function as terminators of nucleic acid biosynthesis if converted into 5'-phosphates and incorporated onto growing DNA chains [2].
