Abstract

Recent work from this laboratory made available for the first time a general synthesis of pyrrol-3-yl sulfoxides from the corresponding 2-isomers by acid-catalyzed isomerization.'In subsequent studies of the chemistry of this novel class of compounds, we sought to exploit the known reactions of sulfoxides to introduce a substituent regiospecifically into the 2- position (eg, chloro) and thus prepare 2, 3-disubstituted pyrroles from pyrrole itself.
