Abstract

Syntheses of the 12 isomeric hydroxybenzo [a] pyrenes are described. Previous syntheses of eight of these iso-mers have been repeated and improved upon. New syntheses of the 1-, 2-, 4-, lo-, and 12-hydroxybenzo [a] pyrenes are reported. Infrared, ultraviolet, fluorescence, and IH NMR spectra of the 12 phenols are provided to facilitate study of the metabolism of this important environmental carcinogen.
