Abstract

The condensation of I with aldehyde II was carried out by heating equimolar amounts of the components in boiling water in the presence of 2 NH= SO,. The structure of 8-carboline III was confirmed by IR and PMR spectra, and also by the negative Ehrlich color reaction, indicating the absence of a free 2-position in the indole ring.
