Abstract

The anthracycline p-quinone unit has been replaced by a 1, 4-di-N-oxide function in the first synthesis of a 7, 9-dideoxyanthracyclinone hetero isostere. 4, 11-Dimethoxy-9- (methoxycarbonyl)-7, 8, 9, lO-tetrahydrobenzo-[blphenazine was synthesized and converted to the 5, 12-di-N-oxide, which is isosteric with the 6-deoxycarminomycinone or a- citromycinone types.
