Abstract: A study of the kinetics and products of the decomposition of the carcinogen N- methyl-N'-nitro-N-nitrosoguanidine (MNNG) in aqueous buffered solutions, 1 M ionic strength at 40 OC, has been carried out over the range pH 4-10. The pKa of MNNG has been determined to be 7.73 f 0.03. Rate constants kht for the buffer-independent, solvolytic, decomposition reaction increase with increasing pH above pH 6.
