Abstract
Summary During the hydrolysis of polyvinyl acetate and also during reesterification of polyvinyl alcohol, unexpected and irregular changes in the apparent molecular weight of the polymer have been noted. X possible explanation of this behavior is that polyvinyl alcohol map have one terminal aldehyde group which, under acid conditions, can undergo acetal formation with the hydroxyl groups of neighboring molecules.
