Abstract

In accordance with the result in the photolysis of 4-hydroxybenzophenone, 3, 5-di-t-butyl-4- hydroxybenzophenone (2) and 3, 5-di-t-butyl-4-hydroxyacetophenone (3) were found to be photochemically unreactive in isopropyl alcohol. However, irradiation of 2 and 3 in cyclohexane resulted in novel de-t-butylation to give 3-t-butyl-4-hydroxybenzophenone (7) and 3-t-butyl-4-hydroxyacetophenone (10), respectively.
