Abstract Oxidation of a series of phenols with cerium (IV) ammonium nitrate (CAN) in acetonitrile under mild conditions yields the mixture of corresponding nitrophenols. In the cases of methylphenols and hydroxy-carboxylic acids, the steric effect may reduce the nitration reaction.
