Abstract
Hauser et al. ll When treated with butyllithium at-100" C, 8b readily underwent brominelithium exchange of the bromine on the benzene ring, but the resulting organolithium reagent (9b), unlike 9a, did not appear to cyclize at-100" C. When temperature was allowed to rise to 20" C and maintained there for 3 h, 1-methylindan (lob) was produced in a yield of 46%. 12 This is in contrast to a yield of 82% of indan (loa), after 15 min at-100" ...
