Abstract

The critical factors in the preparation of alkanesulfinyl chlorides by the chlorination of mercaptans or disulfides in the presence of glacial acetic acid are discussed. This reaction has been extended to the preparation of alkanedisulfinyl chlorides and aromatic sulfinvl chlorides. Sulfinvl chlorides are converted to sulfonyl chlorides when treated with equimolar quantities of glacial acetic acid and chlorine.
