Abstract
Halogen-metal exchange with 2-bromo-3-methyl-2-butenoic acid at-100" C leads to a stable lithiovinyl intermediate which reacts with a variety of electrophiles to afford 2-alkylated derivatives in good yields. Reaction of 3-methyl-2-butenoic acid with n-and tert-butyllithium followed by protonation or alkylation is discussed.
