Abstract
Lithium pentamethylcyclopentadienide (C5Me5Li, Cp* Li) reacted with aromatic aldehyde to provide the corresponding carbinol in excellent yield. The carbinol returns to the parent aldehyde and pentamethylcyclopentadiene upon exposure to acid or due to heating.
