Abstract
18 2-butenoate with activated zinc dust in refluxing THF gave 19 (a mixture of four isomers) in 44% yield along with 32% of the &lactone 20. Dehydration of 19 with thionyl chloride in the presence of pyridine in refluxing CH2C12 afforded 21 (30%) and other isomers.
