Abstract: The 1, 5-quinone of azulene (4) and the 1, 7-quinone of azulene (6) have been synthesized for the first time, nearly 50 years after the first synthesis of azulene (1). Both quinones can be isolated as stable, yellow, crystalline solids. Preparation of the new azulene diacetates 12 and 13 in just two steps from the readily available bicyclic trienone 7 provided the key to these syntheses.
