Abstract
Studies with suitable fatty acid derivatives have clarified many of the reactions of alcohols and ketones in concentrated alkalis. Secondary alcohols are dehydrogenated to ketones which then yield acids by hydrolysis of the C—C bonds adjacent to the carbonyl group. Various side reactions are reported and discussed. A mechanism is proposed for the fission of ricinoleic acid in concentrated alkalis.
