Abstract
The primary and secondary alkyl esters of phenylglyoxalic acid undergo a photochemical reaction in alcohols in which the phenylglyoxalate is reduced to the mandelate ester of the solvent alcohol and the alcohol moiety of the phenylglyoxalate ester is oxidized.
