Abstract
Nornicotine, an endogenous tobacco alkaloid and minor nicotine metabolite, can catalyze aldol reactions at physiological pH. Catalysis appears to be due to a covalent enamine mechanism, an unprecedented reaction with small organic molecule catalysts in aqueous buffer.
