Abstract

Pyridine (1), 2-methylpyridine (2), 3-methylpyridine (3), 4-methylpyridine (4), and 1, 10- phenanthroline undergo HD exchange in neutral D2O at elevated temperatures (180-300° C). With a suitable choice of temperature and reaction time it is possible to prepare selectively deuterated or perdeuterated substrates in good yield.
